Australia urged to intervene in China-Papua New Guinea security deal

The Australian government is being urged to intervene in negotiations between China and Papua New Guinea (PNG) regarding a security deal. PNG's Foreign Minister, Justin Tkachenko, revealed that Port Moresby and Beijing were in early talks about a policing agreement after the capital was hit by deadly riots in January. While China is already one of PNG's major trading partners, Tkachenko emphasized that PNG values its defense and security relationships with Australia and the United States and has not yet accepted China's offer.
